License changes and vanished xbl IDs: what 2026 means for your database

Xbox identifiers are gone and some players got a new license. Here’s how to keep players from losing their characters.

Two updates this year directly affect how servers recognise players. Ever tied your database to a single identifier? Then read on.

xbl: and live: are gone

Since 27 April 2026, GetPlayerIdentifiers no longer returns xbl: (Xbox Live) and live: (Microsoft PUID) identifiers. Cfx cites platform integrity and privacy. Most servers didn’t notice, but scripts that based bans or whitelists on these IDs did.

The June license change

From 24 June, Cfx rolled out a security update against stolen or compromised Rockstar accounts. For a small share of players, that changed their license:/license2: identifier. On servers that tie characters to that license, their progress suddenly seemed to be gone.

Affected players can pick another linked identity as their default in the client, then restart the game. That option is available until 24 June 2027. After that, server staff will need to migrate characters.

What you can do as a developer

  • Store several identifiers per player, not just one.
  • Build a staff tool now for moving characters from one identifier to another. You’ll need it after June 2027.
  • Log which identifiers come in on every join, so you spot shifts straight away.
  • Don’t base bans on a single identifier type.
Support tip: point players with ‘missing’ characters to the identity setting in the client first, before you start migrating anything by hand.
